Do People Have A Brand?

Having a Brand may be a foreign idea or concept to you. If it is, you may be legitimately asking the question – Why would you need to have a brand? Brands are for products like Coke, Wheaties, Nikon, Chevrolet, etc. When we think of brands this is normally our thoughts go to products; but this is only the tip of the iceberg.

Here are some other common brands that you know; you may just not think of them as a brand:

Tom Brady (quarterback for the New England Patriots)

Bill Gates (Chairman of Microsoft)

Guy Kawasaki (brains behind the Apple Macintosh)

President Barrack Obama

President George Bush

Jack Welch (former CEO of General Electric)

Sam Walton (Founder of WalMart)

Scott Brown (newly elected Senator from Massachusetts)

President Abraham Lincoln

General George Armstrong Custer (Little Big Horn fame)

Brittany Spears (singer, song writer)

Michael Jackson (singer, songwriter, dancer, modern icon)

anyway you get the picture.

You may have never thought of these individuals as being a brand, but for the majority of them you have an opinion that is just as strong as your opinion of Coke.

Why Do You Need a Brand?

Before I answer the question about why you need a brand; think of the people named above and ask why would they have a brand? If it was not for the brand that they created and was spread to others on their behalf; would we have any idea as to who they are? The truth is they would, most likely, never have been as recognizable as they are.

Now to the question as to why you need a brand. If you have a desire to be accomplished or to be recognized; you need a brand. If you want to be sought out for opportunities instead of constantly being the one doing the looking; you need a brand. Brands establish our credentials and they help to establish our value. Your brand can help to set you apart from the competition. A brand has the ability to put you at the top of the “A” list.

How Do You Create Your Brand

You create your brand by sharing and giving to the members of your communities. You demonstrate that you can be trusted and that you are interested in their welfare. You answer questions and help solve problems. As you do these things your brand reputation will grow and as people gain trust in you and what you have to say they will refer you to their friends and their communities. Each time your information is shared your sphere of influence expands and therefore your brand recognition.

I do not apologize for it, but I am a Tom Brady fan. Brady was an unknown that was taken late in the 6th round of the football draft. He did not have the chance to play until Drew Bledsoe was injured. He was an unknown. When Brady led the Patriots to his first win; it was not a big event except for the Patriots and the team that they beat. The same was true for the next win. By the time Brady led the Patriots to their third Super Bowl victory; people knew Tom Brady. He had a brand, he had a reputation, people believed that he could lead the Patriots to victory.

It is through your efforts, accomplishments, achievements, and actions that you develop your brand and the world learns of your brand. It starts small at first in your community, but from there it will expand and grow as you achieve more and the word gets out to not only your communities, but also the communities of those that you know.

Branding is important and it starts with those that are closest to you.
