Without these basic fundamentals in your arsenal, you will have a much lower chance of success as an internet marketer.

Whether you are trying to make some extra money, start an online career, or just promote your already existing business online, there are many options available to you.

If you are inexperienced at things related to online advertising and affiliate marketing, here are 5 major tips I would like you to have as somebody who has been in the trenches.

#1 – Don’t be discouraged if you don’t get instant results.

This is probably one of the biggest stumbling blocks for anyone who wants to make money online, or get traffic to a web project / business. When it comes to most conventional (yet effective) marketing techniques, many of them will take some time to show results.

If you are desperate for short-term money, there are ways to make money quick, but sometimes they are not the most reliable. The truth is, anyone trying to start a business online should be prepared to put in some serious work before they see results.

This isn’t to say you can’t make easy money, but building a long-term social media brand, ranking your website, and figuring out how to make money can take time. If you are prepared to spend some time and effort setting up your business, you can reap rewards when your long-term strategies pay off in residual income.

So if you got out there and try it, just give it some time before you give up, because I have seen many frustrated marketers quit when things didn’t go their way, right away.

#2 – Learn to be Resourceful

This is also a very crucial tip, or rather a skill that is learned over time. If you don’t have something, and you need it, you have 2 choices. You can either sit around and do nothing without it, or you can figure out a way to get it.

The choice here is obvious, we are going to go out and get it. Now the question is how efficient we are. If you are inefficient, it may take you more time, as well as even money to find what you are looking for. For example, a guide on how to get more followers on Instagram.

If you learn to be resourceful, you can start finding internet marketing forums, and knowledge bases that will answer most of the questions you might have.

Additionally, never underestimate the power of Google. I say this because most of the time when I need the answer to a problem, I can find it on search engines easily. It can be as simple as copy pasting an error message into Google.

This is useful because when building a website or a campaign, there is always the potential for something to not work right. Being able to find a solution easily will save you time and frustration, which leads into my next tip.

#3 – Don’t let yourself get frustrated

It can be easy to lose your cool when things don’t go your way, but remember that you must treat this as a professional business. This may not apply to everyone, but I myself know I can get easily frustrated when my computer is not cooperating.

Most of this can be based on fear, which is why it is good to start this out as more of a side project. If you quit your job full-time without having any money, then it can be a scary thing when you don’t make money.

My suggestion is to take breaks when needed, especially if you are really working around the clock to make your campaigns successful. If results don’t show up right away, or your campaign doesn’t convert and you waste some money, don’t let it discourage you.

Sometimes this is a game of trial and error, and you must capitalize on every failure as a learning opportunity. My entire affiliate marketing career from 2010 to 2013 was a failure when I had to quit, but I used the whole experience to learn from my mistakes when I came back to the game.

#4 – Don’t Put All Your Eggs in One Basket

In some ways this might apply more to those who are truly trying to make internet marketing their only source of income, but everybody can still benefit from this.

If you look at the world of internet marketing, there is an endless number of different niches, traffic methods, monetization methods, etc. to choose from.

In some cases it can overwhelm you when you try to digest it all. However, take advantage of all the possibilities. If you have a successful campaign, or method of making money, don’t just send it traffic from one area. Send traffic from as many different sources as possible.

If you have one successful niche website or campaign, be sure to start spreading to other niches, or creating other campaigns.

If you wrote an e-book about fitness, be sure to figure out how you can write another one.

These are small examples of ways you can diversify your marketing strategy; in case something goes wrong or stops making you money.
In addition, exploring all your options opens up possibilities for success you might not have expected.

#5 – Don’t get Overloaded

This last tip can be applied in many different ways. First, if you are a real hustler you can be overloaded with how much you need to get done. If you decided to create some niche products, and do CPA marketing for example, you might be busy all day.

You might never run out of things to accomplish, but just don’t let it overload you. If you rush to get things done, or just feel overwhelmed, you won’t enjoy the benefits of working for yourself. Take things piece by piece, especially when completing projects.

Another overload most new marketers will experience is information overload. There are so many forums out there, so many resources, and so much information for someone learning internet marketing, that it can be overwhelming.

Pick one or two topics or areas to learn, as well as projects to work on, and stay focused on those. Don’t let all the shiny promises people make about teaching you to make thousands on autopilot. The bottom line is, don’t let all the information out there distract you.

A new marketer must learn the craft, but in an efficient way, because most of your time should be spent building websites and getting traffic.

These tips are mostly basic business fundamentals, but do not discount them. I would say that 80% of marketers ignore these basic concepts, and just shoot out there trying to make money. Without that strong foundation, most people fizzle out and waste time and money.
